Nextruder filament diameter?

Which feature of the print head determines the thickness of the filament?

I have ordered the MK4 and a couple of spools of filament. Only afterwards did I start thinking about the thickness of the filament. Apparently the standard thickness is 1.75 mm, but is it also possible to use 2.85 mm fiber?

Best Answer by Luther:

The Mk4 does take 1.75 filament.

RE: Nextruder filament diameter?

Good morning,
swapping filament diameters is not a simple option.
the extruder it's self needs a suitable throat for the filament diameter the 1,75 extruder typically has a 2.0 passage through the extruder from the drive wheels to the nozzle, A 2.85mm extruder would need a larger diameter feed path, the Hobbed drive wheels may work with different filament sizes depending upon your printer design.
the Extruder plastics would also need a larger filament path, and the firmware would need revising, to correctly set the steps per millimetre for the filament  feed (this is going to be affected by the depth of engagement of your hobbed gear on the filament. )
then the slicer needs to be setup for 2.85mm filament as well...

I may have missed one or two items...

the Mk0 prusa had a Wade type geared extruder to manage 3mm filament many years ago I am not sure if the Mk4 Extruder could drive the 2.85mm filament successfully (Largely because I have never seen the workings of a mk4 extruder)

Good luck, regards Joan

OK. Maybe I expressed myself a little unclearly. My main concern was whether I had ordered the right thickness of filament when I chose 1.75 mm.
