RE: What would you like to see in the 8-bit firmware?

I would love to see better support for the M117 Set LCD Message command. I do manual filament switches and it would be huge to be able to have a message on the screen telling me what filament to insert.

Thank you!

Disable MMU from Menu

I almost always print with my MMU and just have it loaded with my most commonly used colors and types of filaments. Every now and then though I print with TPU or some other weird or otherwise MMU incompatible filament. This requires that I unplug my MMU from my Prusa in order to manually load that filament. I would love for there to be a way to disable the MMU either through the slicer or even through the menu on the LCD. The ideal case would be selecting MMU disable and then the printer behaves exactly as if the MMU was unplugged. Keep up the great work everyone! I absolutely love my prusa printers!

How about exposing all LCD options and commands via Gcode or serial in some way?

I'd love to e.g. be able to switch build plate or start a filament change from octoprint.

Could it be possible to change the filament type of the sliced file on the printer. Changing between PLA and PETG should be possible since it's mostly a temperature change. I often have to reslice just because i used the wrong one.

Reprint last gcode model - sometimes I need to print multiple copies of parts. Easier to have a single re-print rather than dig down through the menus and select the print again.

I was wondering if you are able to rename the printer.
My Prusa MK3S has been fully upgraded to the Prusa MK3S+ using the upgrade kit.
Only the firmware says it's still a Prusa MK3S printer.

Like the sheet selector, the nozzle sizes should be a list of user entered sizes. Populate the list with the factory values and allow the user to change values in the list. For example, I don't have a 0.25mm nozzle but I do have a 0.20mm nozzle. I'd like to change the 0.25mm nozzle size to 0.20mm so the nozzle size check means something on my printer.

170 °C during Mesh Bed Leveling like on the MINI+ (prevent dripping)

yes please!

Why does this need to be in the firmware? Prusa should change the default MK3 custom G-Code to set the nozzle to 170°C, do the mesh leveling, and then set the nozzle temperature to the first layer temperature. (Like @bobstro has on his web page which I've shamelessly stolen for my profiles.)

I just checked the MINI profile and that is how the MINI does the no-ooze leveling. It's in the PrusaSlicer profile, not the firmware.

RE: What would you like to see in the 8-bit firmware?

I don't understand what the 8-bit part of this means, but here are some ideas:

  • Show time remaining until next pause / filament change so I have an ETA on when I should return to the printer. You can see it in the slicer already.
  • Setting for "text scrolling speed", if you have long file names and want to verify the printing time before picking the print, the print time is the last part of the text, so you may have to wait 10 seconds or more for the text to scroll to the end so I can read it.
  • Being able to add custom calibration models to the Calibration menu. They could be on the SD card, if it detects a folder called "Calibration" or something like this, any files in there could be hidden and appear in the calibration menu.
  • Show the current layer and be able to easily reference it in the Slicer.
    • This way if a print is paused or failed, you could in the slicer hide all the successful layers, and print only from there and maybe recover it.
    • I know it may not work, especially since you may fail part-way through the layer. But if you can figure out which layer, and where you were, maybe even mid-layer stuff can be resumed.
    • Possibly some live Z-adjustment can fix it once you're resuming.

Some +1 for previous suggestions:

  • Individual object canceling/skipping
  • Randomize print positions on the bed (prolongs sheet life)

And some magical wishful thinking future features (not firmware-related):

  • Detect prints that release from the bed and allow options for automatically pause the print, cancel the mesh, and sending a message to me!
  • Detect failed prints in all forms. It needs to be more stable so that 3D-printing can be a foolproof endeavor.
  • More self-diagnostic tools that can detect pieces being worn ahead of time.
  • Let people send pre-sliced models for the printer specifically from a website (and thereby phone), to the printer).

8-bit means Mk3S or older.  The Mini is 32-bit.

Maybe you could try to mirror the menus between the MK3S and Mini.  I often have trouble finding things between them.

RE: What would you like to see in the 8-bit firmware?

I would enjoy some feed forward active damping aka Input Shaping but haven't had the time to try it.

It may really stretch the processor to the limit but I believe it should be possible to implement it using the current sensing ability of the TMC2130 to estimate the resonant mass on the build plate on the fly and update control parameters. The load measurement facilities of the stallguard may do this already but haven't gotten into the details. To reduce the load on the main processor it may be possible to regularly update the microstep tables of the TMC2130 to bring about this effect.

Move over to using a Rasberry Pi and Klipper so we can do input shaping....and ge around all the limitiations of the 8 bit processor.

I'd love to have a "cancel" option in all kinds of places. I have to reset the machine way too often.

  • MMU Single mode filament selection - after realizing I have selected the wrong file
  • 1st layer calibration "continue / start from 0" - if I have the wrong sheet selected
  • ...

Mesh bed leveling based on model's base bounding box.

I often wondered why mesh bed leveling needed to probe the entire bed area for prints.  It would be nice if it could do a reduced number of probes around the minimum bounding box of the models base.  The 7x7 probing grid seems excessive when I'm only printing a model with a 3cm base at the center of the bed.

I agree that it should be in the slicer, not the F/W. I actually have NEVER had a problem with nozzle oozing during the mesh bed levelling routine and find it a huge waste of time. If you are starting cold, it's not as much of a problem, but if you are doing serial prints and the nozzle is already hot, it has to cool down (which takes longer than heating up by the same amount), do the cal, then heat up again. I thought it was in the MINI F/W already. If it is in PrusaSlicer, I will hunt it down and disable it.

RE: What would you like to see in the 8-bit firmware?

a time estimation to pause or to color change would be awesome.

capability to choose to keep or not keep temperatures when paused or when filament change.

another method for bed leveling where the noozle doesn't ooze material.

A guided method to change noozle and to check if noozle are not worned out.

Sensor and motor on board diagnostic method to check if all axis move all sensor work ok including filament detection. I think most of it is checked already but i don't think all all of them.

Automatic sheets recognition maybe it is far beyond a firmware update and does require a barecode on the sheet or rfid...

capability to plug a cell phone on the usb to make firmware update or drive the printer from a better interface without a dedicated raspberry pi and octoprint.

sleep mode option for the screen

Handle folder on the SD card to have for instance Gcodes of on project in same folder, have a folder with calibration models...

add a counter next to the print files to know you have printed this Gcode already XXX times. Maybe the printer needs to increment a number in the gcode.

Randomize print position? Perhaps that makes sense in farm mode, but a worthless and dangerous option for me. As a data point, I've been using the same smooth PEI for over three years, printing in the exact same center for 99.99% of prints. Plastic still sticks fine. Soap and water works.

Personally, I disagree.. I would like this feature (it could be a user selectable option so that we could choose the behavour which suits us).. I have no problem with adhesion anywhere on the bed.. But I am getting a blister in the middle of mine, as I keep doing small prints and forgetting to move the object in slicer.

This discussion has actually inspired me to create a Slicer Feature Request in GitHub to do something similar:

https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/6537

For me, one of the features I want is better handling of the "Sheet" change so that it adds "ARE YOU SURE" (or some kind of confirmation).. I can't tell you how many times I have suffered for hours with object not sticking and then realised I accidently clicked on SHEET.

I did raise this on Github and there was little interest in changing the behavour as a change would take up valuable Firmware space.. But if there is now more space for code, perhaps this could be reviewed

That said, I would be happy just to have the SHEET option moved down the list a bit, so its not as close to options we use every day (i.e Print from SD).
