What is with the captcha when logging in?

After 2 years of being a member of this "community" I have to prove that I am not a <> robot???? What the <>? This shows a total lack of respect towards the people (that means you) that buy, use and freely try to help others (you again) by PR. ( This is where <> programmers and sycophants try to explain why they have to treat YOU this way). This is not an acceptable way to treat existing member.

Those things are automated. Don't go thinking someone singled you out. A change or upgrade in your browser, cleaning of browser cookies, or even a period refresh on their end can trigger it. There might have been some automated login attempts against your account which can also trigger a safety check. It's unfortunate,  but we've learned from hard experience that the spammers will go to great lengths to pollute any sort of forum.

For the last 3 weeks I keep getting a captcha verification screen when I go to log on.

Sorry, but I am going to spoil it for those who are wanting to say " It's your fault", " some one is trying to use your ID", "... unusual traffic from your IP", or any other.

If I try to logon in the morning and get the captcha. I just cancel and do not logon( I do not verify). If I try again later, I can logon as normal, so it's not my fault, no one is trying to use my ID. As for unusual traffic, I have seen this from other websites, BUT they always have put up a message saying so and don't give any opportunity to continue.

Something is intermittently breaking between my mouse and the PR logon screen. Now you can explain to me how the internet works and how so many things can cause problems and how it is not PR's problem.

What is with the captcha when logging in?

CAPTCHA technology authenticates that a real person is accessing the web content to block spammers and bots that try to automatically harvest email addresses or try to automatically sign up for access to websites, blogs, or forums. CAPTCHA blocks automated systems, which can't read the distorted letters in the graphic.

CAPTCHA

This is becoming more of the standard to prevent spam.  You are gonna have to get used to it.

As anyone can create an account what is the point of securing login with a Captcha?

Logins

CAPTCHAs on login help prevent automated login attacks.

Not perfect, but captchas slow down automated spam bots (a good thing)

It's a barrier to automated account creation bots. Without it, spammers script sign-up and start bombarding the forum with spam with (literally) thousands of posts. Think of the Captcha as one of those little wrist bands you get when attending a paid event. They check your ID and verify you're a valid attendee, then you wear the band to get through the gate next time. In this case, the band is a cookie file that is stored on your computer that confirms you've cleared the "human" check using a particular browser. If you change browsers or computers, you basically have to do the captcha to show you're alive again. It's not perfect, but it does a lot to slow down spam. If you remove the wristband (delete the cookie), you have to verify again.

Maybe it wasn't clear in my post. I wasn't asking what it was, but why PR is using it. Of all the domains I have to login to, only this one has used captcha if it perceives an issue with existing ID/password, and use alternate method of verifying you when creating a new account. As for automated systems not being able to read the distorted letters, are you sure?

Then we are doomed. The earliest website I found offering captcha bypass was 2007 and it is selling their services today.  As for getting used to it, one of the Internet's few good features is that there is always another retailer that doesn't use it. I just go elsewhere.

Catastrophe

There is no reason to catastrophize.  Security is good thing and I would rather type a Capcha than deal with spam posts.

Absolutely! I don't want spam, advertisements, and other junk in our community. This is a great tool to make this place informative and enjoyable for all.

Yes, captcha can be annoying, but if it prevents even a little spam, then I'm ready to accept it 🙂
