That's not what I wanted to read.  Worried about how much it's going to cost us now to get a 3d printer delivered.

We can thank our democratic minority for the decision to Brexit. It's happened, now we have to manage it....     I believe Australia and Canada to mention two countries,  also get worked over by their governments on import duties...

@gordon_w But this is exactly what I think Prusa are trying to avoid, by doing the UK VAt registration.

That mess only happens when companies just ship without doing it right.

Fingers crossed it's just a temporary mess!

We have family in Toronta, CA - roughly a 7 hour car drive away. Sending gifts to them from the US makes me feel like a drug smuggler and customs is often erratic. For some reason, toys cost 2-3 times as much up there.

Now if you guys would like to talk about statehood... 😀

I agree, they have said they are in the process of registering for UK VAT. I suspect this is why there is no estimate of when shipping will resume - they are waiting on HMRC.

I have not understood it yet. Is Zaribo and Caribou one and the same company? I bought some things from the former Zaribo. Invoices are from Caribou??

For anyone who is trying to find the timecode on the video from Prusa3D on the 6th Janauary 2021 on brexit it is here

Joesef said "Everything is fine, Hopefully everything should be sorted  quite quickly but we are awaiting a resposne for the paperwork" which they had to print out, write by hand and then scan back in via email.  He went on to say "Hopefully it will be quick but if not we will find other ways to get this stuff to you",  Joesef said "this is bonkers". Prusa Research has been having a lot of people on twitter and discord reaching out ask about this. They have said as soon as they they will start shipping to the UK again. Questions where asked about shipping out of the UK. E3D is a supplier for Prusa which is based in the UK. They explained that in Business to Business transactions are quite easy to do but they have said "they will see how things go". Prusa has stocked up for 3 months in prep for COVID and Brexit.

 

My personal take + research

I feel extremely sorry for the hand that Prusa has been dealt with. Unfortauntely getting shipping ready for the UK isn't as simple as registering for HMRC tax clearance and an EORI number (and that's not including the EORI number required for Northern Island). Every single item has to be assigned a HS code which is then assigned to each item so that further duties and tarrifs can be applied. Finally a commerical invoice has to be written up and included with the parcel being printed 4 times over and included in a shipment package stuck to the outside of the parcel or in some cases a certificate of origin may be required for a chamber of commerce/trade body. This can also be conducted electronically depending on the country and courier. As reported in news outlets some people are reporting being hit with fees that are upto 40% instead of 20% due to having to pay duty plus other fees when the packages are brought over the boarder.

Prusa will need to declare the origin of the goods and then there is the issue of items being delivered duty unpaid. Now couriers are starting to offer these types of services but they charge the companies £5-25 for the privilage of paying duty on behalf of the customer. If Prusa was to contiune to ship duty unpaid I suspect customers would send back the goods which would in turn cost Prusa3D a lot of money.

Then there is the complexity of the Northern Irish boarder which adds additional weird edge cases that need to be legally looked at from what I have heard from the customer support live chat.

I did drop the team an email saying I am cheering them on as this must be a bit of a headache to say the least. Prusa Research went above and beyond in shipping my mini out before the chaos unfolded which I am extremely greatful for I am worried about being able to obtain spare parts and filliment but over time hopefully something can be sorted out.

I have considered using a proxy shipping/buying service however this isn't something that is recommended and can be extremely costly with hidden fees plus the duty to pay as well as the additonal shipping costs and additional parcel processing fees due to brexit.

In July 2021 the EU is introducing the one stop tax shop which will require UK businesses to register for tax in the inital country customers purchase from and file VAT on a per country basis via the new system. However the good news is that this will mean that companies in the UK that currently have to register for tax in each individual country will be able to file VAT returns at a single destination. As for shipping out of the UK one of the largest couriers DPD and DHL put a pause on shipping due to the large volumes of parcels being rejected at the customs boarder with incorrect paperwork. Meanwhile UK businesses are being told by uk government officals to setup shop in the EU to avoid all the paperwork and customs duties.

So if anyone is wondering how things are going at the moment with importing/exporting goods in to and out of the UK it is pretty much slow and costly as expected.

I wrote to the sales team to ask if it would be possible to use a proxy shipping service to buy the goods, ship them to a warehouse and then get them to the UK and pay the customs fees (I was only looking to get some parts so I thought it was worth asking). I got back an email which hopefully will be good news for UK buyers!  "UK should be back in our eshop before the end of January, so, I think this week. The live stream didn't give me any confidence of a solution this week,  unless they are just planning to allow orders over £135 and sending them without VAT, so it gets added by the courier. 

I guess as long as they get the tariff ID correct it should be just VAT and whatever ludicrous handling fee the couriers charge!

New updates during yesterday's live:

I understand the frustration from both sides and I understand the delay (probably HRMC are receiving tons of request for registration), but it would be nice to allow orders over 135£ so that at least people looking to buy in bulk or to buy printers can get their position in the queue. I am a bit partial on this, as I am one of those that would benefit from it, but it would still be nice.

I am willing to provide a summery of what was discussed on the livestream for anyone who is unable to watch it.

Prusa Research filed the paperwork for obtaining a VAT number in the UK 3 months ago. Due to the UK's new law of goods under £135 requiring taxation having a VAT Number is critical so that we can buy parts and filliment in the UK. However they have not heard back from HMRC and cannot sell goods at this moment in time due to this however they have hinted that they might permit the sale of items higher than £135 but with customs fees and taxes required by the UK consumer at checkout. Prusa Research has said they are as frustrated as we are at being unable to sell to us when they have jumped though all the hoops required by the UK in order to sell in the UK. As soon as it's resolved they will be able to sell in the UK again.

This isn't Prusa Research's fault. The process for filling out the VAT registration requries scanning in paperwork by hand. It is not electronic apart from emailing the forms in. On the livestream you can tell that people are frustrated at Prusa but this is something beyond there phsycial control. They have done everything they can to try and get things ready to sell in the UK and once they are able to they will notify every on twitter.

I feel bad, they're caught in a bad spot and I kinda get consumers being frustrated (Though they should be mad at the UK government not Prusa) and I'd love to give them money for a printer but now I'm torn between waiting an indeterminate amount of time to even be able to order this and then a 4-8 weeks in queue + shipping after that for it to arrive to me or I can pay 1/3rd as much for an Ender 3 V2 to show up tomorrow even though I would very much prefer the Mk3S at the end of the day.
