UK orders

Hi guys,

I was just about to get a late Christmas gift for myself and preorder a Prusa mini kit when I saw that the shop does not accept orders from the UK due to Brexit.

Anybody knows how long will this last? I haven't been able to find anything about that.

RE: UK orders

Unfortunately there is no official information that I am aware of.
there are reports that it may be sorted in Seven days, but the sources are unsubstantiated.

Please be patient... I expect it will be worth the wait

Prusa have to register for UK VAT with HMRC, so unfortunately a lot of the delay will be out of their hands. There was a question asked about the current competition being open to UK users, and it is hoped that the situation will be resolved before it closes on 21st Feb.

It looks like Prusa are lagging behind, missed the boat, or just dragging there feet.... Ordered from bits from Bondech a Swedish company, and a headset from Steelseries a Danish company with no problems atoll delivering to UK. You can read into this however you see fit.

Perhaps Mr Prusa should be spending less time on his uTube videos and more on his companies priorities.

@floydee

I can't comment on Prusa's priorities, and I don't know what percentage of his sales volume is from UK, so I don't know what priorities they should set. There are multiple press reports of companies no longer selling to the UK as a result of the new rules, at least Prusa have said they will resume once they are registered and can legally charge us UK VAT.

On the flip side of this Prusa expedited shipment of UK orders  (ahead of other orders in the queue) at the end of 2020 to minimise the impact of the shipping delays and tax / duty issues from the 1st Jan.

I'd like to add my appreciation for Prusa shipping my MK3/S to MK3S+ upgrade kit before year end, ahead of expectations. Wish I'd put my MMU2S order in at the same time, although I'm not sure that could have been rushed through.

Maybe some should attack Prusa less for red tape delays caused by Brexit, creating a delay of a few days and be instead glad that the company has chosen to uphold the UK market, unlike some other smaller and mid sized niche companies.

Guys please, there are obviously always better ways to handle everything, but they are doing their best, and as long as they keep focus on working on the important things, quality of the products and support, I will support them.

If I had to give a piece of advice on now and for future issues like this, I would just say to be more upfront and clear with customers and have an official communication to address this kind of issue. For example, now the shop doesn't say anymore that they are not shipping to the UK, but I can't find the UK in the list of countries when I try to add an address. Having an official communication about wide issues like this and their development is useful and helps customer understand the difficulties of running a business, which is not always obvious for everyone.

Sadly the message is still there for me ( https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/ ).

As this is a user - user forum you're not actually addressing your (valid) comment about communication to people who can make a difference. I suspect that the issue is Prusa don't know how long it will take because it's in the hands of the HMRC and to some extent the carriers. The whole UK - EU trade situation is a 'mess' (keeping it family friendly!) at the moment and nobody seems to know how long it will take to improve. There is a risk that if Prusa pass on any forecasts or estimates that they receive for timescales it becomes "Prusa said it would be resolved by...." and people turn on them anyway, which maybe a reason for the silence until they have the paperwork and can start shipping again.  😀

RE: UK orders

I also buy quite a lot of small items from the EU, because they are simply not available in the UK (due in part to trade cartels preventing service kits being sold to end users, but I digress).  Having spoken with one such supplier who will no longer ship to the UK, I was told that the UK is unique in requiring overseas companies to register for VAT, and that this additional burden (not just to register with HMRC, but all the rest of the admin) was what had made sales to the UK unviable.

We can but hope that the UK accounts for sufficient of Prusa's sales that they will decide that we are worth the bother.

Having previously dealt with HMRC, I can tell you that they generally work at a snail's pace, unless it's to demand money from you.  Add to this the utter chaos that the twin impact of Brexit and COVID have wrought on all government departments, and I'd be surprised if anyone is getting their application processed in a sensible timeframe... unless they are a Tory party donor...

Josef mentioned on the last live stream that they had to print the form out, fill it in by hand, scan it and email it back, where of course someone will have to key in the details, which indicates how well UK gov had been prepared for the changes!

I am grateful that Prusa are taking this on and will continue to support UK customers, I hope they don't change their mind!

I think that Prusa may have been a bit busy, recently...

and Our government have taken more than 5 years to not be ready for Brexit...

so there  is no guarantee that it's Prusa Dragging their feet!

RE: UK orders

Hi,

The message at the top of the E-Shop page is not an adequate explanation of the situation, Prusa should expand as to the reasons why there is a delay.

I think that Planet Prusa is wonderful but this situation sucks.

Brexit is done, any negotiations with the EU were always going to run to the wire, there is no point blaming that.

I don't understand why I can buy parts from a VAT registered business in Germany and have them shipped to the UK in a couple of days ( last week) but I can't do this from Prusa?

It may be that the explanation is simple but I would still like to hear it. 🙂

Regards

George

Prusa is not the only company caught in this mess. It looks like the issue is not only customs but also shipping. Facing a choice between taking a customer's money and not being able to ship, and asking customers to wait, I suspect Prusa has tried to choose the lesser of two evils. Prusa seems to have made maximum effort to ship existing orders before the chaos, but I'm not sure they can do much more.

RE: UK orders

Reading through some of the guidance as an outsider, I can see why there's some confusion. If I'm reading it correctly, UK customers can expect the customs shock that the Australians have experienced.

As of 1 January, 2021, shippers selling goods valued at or below £135 into the UK will be responsible for collecting and paying UK VAT for these shipments. The VAT amount should be collected at the point of sale and paid to HMRC through the UK VAT registration.

For goods sold into the UK valued above £135, the importer will remain responsible for paying the UK VAT. This can be paid by the importer via postponed VAT accounting or through the customs declaration.

If nothing else, it sounds like Prusa will have to differentiate between orders under and over £135 and figure out how to pay UK VAT. It also seems returns are more complicated, something Prusa will definitely be concerned about.

RE: UK orders

I wish they would allow us to order and get into the queue. With a 10 week lead time on the Mini, I would hope it's all cleared up by then, if not slip the order.

But please let us place our orders into the queue, if they need to ask for a little extra tax, they could ask later!

I agree. There are several weeks of queue anyway, might as well merge the two waiting time hoping to have things ready when the first orders from UK come ahead of the queue. If things are not ready, they can always be postponed.

RE: UK orders

Hi,

I already have printers, I'm looking for Prusa filament + spares which can be below the £ or Euros limit mentioned above, they already have various shipping options, but my point here is that other companies are sending me parts etc. to the UK from the EU without drama.  It might be it will cost me more to ship (hasn't so far) but at least then I would have a choice.

My choice at the moment - get someone (a friend) in the EU (Ireland) to order the parts and get them to ship it to the UK, sure it will be hassle and cost more but at least it is an option.

My original point is Prusa should expand their position to say whether it is customs,VAT,shipping or something else is the problem as it seems other EU based businesses seem to be overcoming the difficulties. The E-shop Brexit notice is inadequate.

A time scale for resolution of this would be nice, it's the not knowing as to whether it is 7 days, 7 weeks or 7 months.

Regards

George
