The Satin Sheet Thread

I see it's not been discussed yet, so what do we think?
I managed to get my order for the new stain sheet in shortly after it was announced, it's been dispatched and on its way.
Really both excited and intrigued by it! Will this be the magic bullet, one perfect sheet to print PETG, ASA, and PLA? Or will we be back to the situation where we have to make a choice between texture or adhesion?

How has your print come out, and have you found any handy hints or tips to make the most of it, layer heights, cleaning methods, etc?

RE: The Satin Sheet Thread

I just use dish soap and water, rinse with hot water, and dry with plain  paper towels...

print PLA at Bed temp of 70C...

Guess I will do the same on the satin sheet!

@joantabb

I found a local source for those blue hand grip scrubbers.  Doller General has them for 6 for $1.

Joan, do you use the blue/green part of the sponge ?

I have a smooth textured sheet here that doesn't adhere good anymore. I must say that I clean it every print with 99% IPA and regularly (bout every 10 prints) with acetone.

Maybe a pei sheet is useless after a certain time ?

I am pretty sure she used the Blue.  That is what I use.

So you guys only use dish soap and no IPA or acetone or whatever ?

(I ordered a satin sheet too and its also already shipped, so in a few days I'll have a brand new buildplate)

The keyword is sparing.  I have used it for both the smooth and textured.  It is not recommended for the textured but it will reset the surface if you can't get anything to stick.

I start with n escalation of forces type of approach:

  1. Alcohol: I use it every few prints.  I use 91% or better isopropyl alcohol.  I spray it on a cool bed and let it sit for 10-15 seconds and wipe it off with a lint-free towel.  Once in a while, an alcohol rinse is helpful to remove PLA residue. It does not remove finger oils as well as soap and water.

  2. Dish soap and water:  Alcohol doesn't clean the body oils off the bed; soap and water do. I prefer Dawn dish soap. Wash the bed in hot water, use a fresh paper towel as a washcloth, with a few drops of plain dish soap.  Rinse well in hot water - if you have very soft water, rinse a bit longer.  If you are going to scrub the surface, use a non-scratch sponge. Try with a lint-free towel.
  3. Acetone wash: Use very, very sparingly.  This should be a last resort if you are considering tossing and replacing the surface.  Do not under any circumstances soak the surface.  Pour a 1-2 cm puddle of acetone on the bed.  Spread it around with a fresh paper towel.  It will evaporate fast as you clean.  You do not want to leave it on there long.  This step removes PEI oxides that form over time.   It will improve PLA adhesion to a like-new state.  I have 10 printers that use textured and smooth sheets.  I have done this 4 times with great success in 3 years.  This should what I mean by sparingly.

I do 1 and 2 every week.  #3 have done only 4 times on two different sheets in 3 years.  They were troubled from the start and it worked at resetting them when I consider tossing them.

Yes I do use the abrasive side, if adhesion fails.

So its no problem that the abrasive side makes visible lines in the PEI ? (they are visible but not deep at all)

My pads do not leave marks.  Make sure yours are marked "non-scratch".

I am an equal opportunity kinda girl...

I have used Green and Blue, and I am currently using white... 🙂

What ever is cheapest at  the   general stores...

PEI is pretty robust. and I tend to use textured build plates Most of the time.  I haven't noticed any obvious scratches,

RE: The Satin Sheet Thread

I'm curious about how the new satin sheet will work, but I'm holding off until we get some feedback as to how it performs, based upon the issues heard about with the textured sheets. (Last I checked they were out of stock.)

My personal experience with the smooth and textured sheets, over a period of about 10 months now, is that, if anything, the adhesion appears to improve over time.

The sheets have held up very well over hundreds of prints, showing very little wear and tear, other than a few pieces of one side of one of the smooth sheets that I damaged early on, growing impatient and using a metal implement to force-remove a sticky print.  Since that lesson learned I've been careful to use a release agent with ABS (and PETg and PC Blend) and to let things cool down before removing.

@jsw

I will do a thorough review when mine arrives.  Not shipped yet.

I just received Dawn Mr. Clean Pads from a relative.  I will review the results when I use them.

RE: The Satin Sheet Thread

Today I have for the first time (on the smooth PEI bed that didn't adhere well) used liquid disk soap with a sponge, but mine was a little scratching, but the scratches are extremely light and don't show up on the print. I did print a reasonable size object (50mm round) which sticked very well but released when bending. I also printed my very small 25% scale LEGO bricks which are 4x4mm and use single perimeter walls. They also sticked very well.  And now I'm printing a 100% 1:1 scale lego plate with 12x6 studs, so that object had 55 hollow 4mm wide cilinders which are printed loose from eachother and only at the end they are connected. Everything held in place perfectly

First impressions ... Pretty impressed!

No other way to describe it, other than satin in texture, not rough, not smooth just satin, the perfect mix of both.

The label is pretty clear, no acetone!

Similar thickness and z height as the powder coated textured sheet, but with the bead not so squished. Nice clean, easy first layer and grips well with petg and pla, I still have to test ASA, ABS, FLEX and woodfill.

Leave it a couple of min after printing they slip right off with no tools or pressure.

I absolutely would not let anything rough, sharp, or even slightly pointy near this, I'm sure it is robust, but I don't think it would survive a metal scraper, given how easy it comes off the sheet when cooled you would have to be an idiot to want to hack at it with metal anyway.

It does show finger grease, and probably makes it look worse than it actually is, I printed over the grease with no adhesion issues at all.

Bottom texture doesn't remove the layer completely, but certainly hides them more than pei, with no noticeable warping.

I printed a cube in both Prusament Galaxy PLA and Prusament Chalky Blue PETG flawlessly, with very similar if not identical z heights. I also did photogads bed adhesion in spiral mode without fail in PETG, it started a very minor wobble at the top but the base held strong all the way up.

https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/30079-ultimate-bed-adhesion-test-deluxe

Over all a good buy, does the job I hoped it would and more.

Thanks not_dave, that's good to hear.

I got mine ordered before the Black Friday frenzy, hope to have it this week. If I fall in love with it I hope I don't have to wait long for more.

BTW I use soap and water almost exclusively on my sheets. It has worked better for me than IPA.
