Suggestions for a Price - XL and MK4S with enclosure.

I have a friend locally who wants to sell me his Mk4S with the Prusa Enclosure and 5 head XL.  They are about 2 years old and lightly used.  I am tempted to buy them since I would not have to pay shipping and I could use a couple more.

I see XLs on eBay for $1700-3500 and Mk4S for $350-750.  Any thoughts?

As a work-horse printer you can't go wrong with the MK4S. If could pick one up for $350, you could have yourself a "brand new" (sort of) Core One for only $500 more if you purchase the upgrade kit.

Strong point.  I have one MK4S that is in an enclosure that I have not upgraded.  A second for 350 would be a great deal.

My 5 Cents,

If you need the Print Volume Go for the XL. But, keep in mind even for 1700$ you have a printer thats slow, high maintenance and 5 Times the Trouble with Extruders.

Mk4s plus Upgrade (Index maybe?) is a good way to go.

I already have an XL with 5 heads.  2 years, one upgrade - zero maintenance outside of lubrication and cleaning.  It is a very fast printer.  Much faster at multi material than my Bambu’s.

I am curious if they will make that an option.

Honestly at this juncture I see the Mk4 with the enclosure as kind of a white elephant.  If you can get it for the same price (or near) what you would otherwise pay for a Mk4 without an enclosure, sure.  If you are paying extra for the enclosure, that premium could have otherwise gone towards the upgrade to a Core One.

No I misunderstood your statement.  I interpreted it as the MK4S could take an INDEX upgrade.

As you know the seller and presumably can inspect the printers before purchase you should be OK - you know how to operate, maintain and repair them so try and see them working and set the price accordingly.

For others following this thread be aware that the 'sell an expensive thing at too good to be true prices for a quick sale' scammers are now listing 3D printers - you 'only' pay a 25% deposit up front and they'll take the rest when they deliver; except they don't, they're uncontactable and you're out a few hundred (currency of choice).  One filter that gets rid of many of them is to pretend you will be traveling in the seller's area and can drop by tomorrow to collect - if they make any excuse at all - drop the deal.

Cheerio,

I have 2 Bambu printers.  I have never taken a extruder apart.  Push the send button and they just work.  I just bought a Prusa XL 5th with 210 hours on it.  It sucks!  I had to revert back to older firmware. I've had all 5 heads apart multiple times for upgrades.  Its just finally starting to produce prints.  I asked the guy why is he selling it?  (In a room full of other printers)  He said is was to fussy.

RE: Suggestions for a Price - XL and MK4S with enclosure.

A couple of years ago at SMRRF (probably was late 2024, it was just before the Bambu H2D was announced), the XL on the Prusa stand was playing up and I remember someone commenting something like "OK, it's not just me".

I have had to take apart a Bambu H2D extruder because of a filament jam. I don't know whose fault it was - the printer or the filament - but when you do have to maintain the H2D, it is complex and difficult. That being said, they usually just work. I guess you choose between frequent but quick maintenance, or infrequent but lengthy.  That being said, the XL is one of the few multi material machines with a 350mm bed, and maybe worth it if you need to do that and can justify the cost of several thousand (as you will need the enclosure, because you are probably using that machine for engineering parts, not giant flexi-dragons)
