I agree, this is irritating. Should be OPTIONAL in case you want to change the focus of your reply, but not a requirement. Evenso, I usually just type a period (".") in the box and carry on. I believe a "space" works also.

You can enter all sorts of nonsense in the title. I'd understand if the title were used in the front page summaries as it's a handy way to summarize what your post is about, but it's not used anywhere that I can find.
