Prusament PETG Jet Black - translucent?

Hello to all Prusa-Users and fans! 🙂

I own my MK3 since 2018 and love it- so I thought it would be good to give Prusament a try... and ordered a spool of PETG Jet Black.
Printing quality is perfect- but I think, it shouldn't be translucent, right?

You can easily use a small lamp and light through the filament string... also printing 4 layers (0.8mm thickness) is totally translucent (black with a greyish-translucent touch).

Is this ok or is there anything wrong with the colorization of my spool?
Prusa says that Jet Black is used for their printer-parts... but when I look at my MK3, the parts are really BLACK, not black translucent with a decent touch of grey...

Is there somebody with the same experience?

Greetings and thanks,
Matthias

Here are a few pictures...

1) you can easily light trough the filament string:

These parts are exactly the same (both 0.8mm thick, four layers)- one with amazon PETG black, the other one with Prusament PETG Jet Black:

Alot of PETG filaments are translucent.  The G usually stands for glass.  Different brands have different amounts of fillers and colourants though so it really does depend on brand.

The G stands for "glycol" and has nothing to do with glass or translucency in general.

I think, that something is wrong with my spool... I also posted some pictures, but they are still "awaiting moderation".

Well you learn something new everyday 🙂  I was just going on the advertising bumf from the last lot of petg I bought where the g stood for glase and spouted effusive about its glass like properties.  I do know that the base PET is the same stuff used in plastic drinks bottles and so is transparent and that every roll of petg I have had (admittedly only about 4 different brands) has always been slightly translucent, even the blacks.

Hi Neophyl and thanks for your reply! 🙂

Can somebody confirm my Jet Black filament has to look like that?
I still think, it has to be way more black and less translucent?

Best regards,
Matthias

I use a lot of Galaxy Black and a bit of Jet Black, but honestly none of my parts are that thin.  I can't say for sure, but I know that a 1.5mm flat piece appears complete "solid" to me even when I do hold it up to a window today,  but its not that large.  I can say for sure by looking that 1.5mm+ pieces are 100% solid to me even in direct sunlight.  Hope that helps

Is your printer grinding? Bearings squeaking? Motors smoking?
Step 1) Wash your Steel Sheet
Step 2) Return to Step 1

Good morning Nilok,

ok, thanks a lot! I will print a thicker part and re-check that.

Best regards,

Matthias
