Printables.com - Models listing by likes

I noticed that now most of the pages have the models listed by number of descending likes. I honestly don't like it.

I definitely prefer to always see the most recent models.

Not to be a snot here, but I've found a DECREASE in utility and usefulness since they changed domains and, worse, started that 'meters' competition.

The quality of the models, prior to that, was significantly higher than on the 'usual suspect' 3d print sites.  Now there seems to be an emphasis of quantity over quality.

Quality against quantity, always the same question.

For the listing sort order, I would prefer my last setting to be retained in my profile. So I complain only once, not twice 😉

I wanted to write it too but I thought about it only after opening the topic. I fully agree it would be the best solution.

Waiting for the web site developers to improve this, I changed my shortcut to Printables to https://www.printables.com/model?o=newest to get models sorted by latest.

Yes, this.  It's pretty annoying that the default sorting is by likes, because it means when I open the models page I will see mostly the same stuff that was there before.  It also means that new models will get less exposure, and therefore will be less likely to GET likes.

I've gotten into the habit of restricting the search to the last week and then ordering by new uploads, which I assume orders them by post date, descending.  I do not care for the default ordering by likes.

The categories should get a good clean-up.  The tag situation is a MESS!

Alas, my friend, I have to agree with you.  The short competitions in particular seem to produce a fair bit of, shall we say, less than exciting stuff. Not that there aren't some with potential, such as the "Last meter" competition but rings, coasters, soap dishes, buttons… geez… But then again, I have to admit, my brain is just more wired for "function" rather than "aesthetics"...

Any competition encourages a flood of designed-for-competition designs which are not fully tested.  The flash contests are about as bad as can be as there is no time for any testing - the prizewinner is presumably subjected to a cursory check by the awarding panel ...

Eg. I downloaded and printed one that not only won but was much admired on Prusa Live (a clever bag clip*) and discovered that it failed repeatedly in use.

I regard the 'practical' parts flash competitions as largely pointless.  They might be OK if they were 'design a superhero' type contests where the object is to look pretty but the so-called practicality simply serves to convince newcomers that even the 'best' prints are rubbish.

Rather more annoying: there doesn't seem to be any way to exclude competition entries from search results, -contest and -competition have no discernable effect.

Cheerio,

*To be fair: The winner has continued to test and develop this design and now offers a range of variants and suggestions for restoring function to failing examples.  This extremely unusual exception to the rule reinforces my point.

True. Kudos to him, he really responded to feedback. I have about 20 of those clips in use right now, and they're great. But as you said, it's the exception to the rule...

..and since we ended up off the topic why not also discuss how the models in competition are rewarded? for example: this winner and this not winning, just to name two..

Two examples I would generally ignore 'cos it's as quick and easy to design a personal version as it is to to download one and figure out the printing requirements.

When entering a competition you accept that the judge may not agree that your entry is best - even if it is.  'The judges decision is final' is standard unless it's a popular vote contest, and sometimes even then.

Oh look, judging by likes...

LOL, I wonder what it would be if the first one was blank or had a sample name of Etaoin Shrdlu or something, and the second one had the name Josef Prusa.  😉

I dunno, I thought seeing an articulated penis when I loaded printables.com to be pretty hilarious.

I would think that they would (or should) have an 'adult' or 'NSFW' category (I looked, if it's there, it's not obvious) as many of today's makers are well below the age of majority.

I would like to thank the admins and developers and point out to everyone that most of the model lists are back to being sorted by new uploads.

However, the general page is still sorted by likes. In any case a great job, thanks again.

I think it would help the quality of the contests already substantially if only real world printed models would be permitted and all "only poorly rendered" entries not (and consequently deleted at least once the deadline has passed).

Cheerio,

Have you noticed that the objects that refer to josef, prusa, prusajosef or josefprusa, all the objects that look like a spool of filament (obviously only the prusament) are always the most attractive?

There are these two models (just to point out a couple) that I think are also usable, this is extremely nice (even if the designer has let himself go by inserting 5 letters of the scandal), this is extremely handy but this one (which is obviously the most liked) I think is silly.

A question always arises spontaneously for me, who are those 100 and over users who have the courage to like each model that represents a spool of filament?

RE: Printables.com - Models listing by likes

On July 6, I posted a model of an LCD knob.  On July 8, they announced the LCD knob contest.  I am not allowed to enter my LCD knob because it was posted prior to July 7.  Granted, my LCD knob was not going to win the contest even if it were entered, but I am not sure what purpose this rule serves.
