NFC Filament. Are we going to be forced to buy it?

With the looks of the Prusa store and all the non-NFC filaments  that are out of stock, are we going to be forced to buy the marked up NFC filamenet?

No one is forcing you to buy Prusament unless it's a specific shade of orange you are after. For PLA or PETG, Overture and Polymaker filaments are as good or better. Prusament PC Blend however is an exception. I haven't found an alternative brand that is better.

To buy or not to buy? That is the question. I guess it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous pricing. But then alas poor Prusa...

Take arms against a sea of troubles!

Seems pertinent to this forum, on multiple levels. 😉

Forced?  No.

I can foresee a situation where I do most of my prototyping with cheap, generic, non NFC filaments - as I do now, but then switch to High end NFC spools for the final product.

Cheerio,

I'll rephrase the question for some of you.

Are the NFC filaments going to be all that Prusa offers?  With much of the non-NFC out of stock, I wonder.  I like their filaments.  That brings us to another question.  Did they come up with a solution to a problem that didn't exist?

Sounds like a great idea.  Not sure I want to pay extra for it.

All of their filaments going forward are going to be on NFC spools. This will all make sense once the INDX is available. I'm even using now 3rd party tags for inventory management.

Yay! $6 additional cost to ship material half way around the world with a new feature I don't use! Happy day.

So vote with your wallet as the american's like to say.  Its up to a vendor to decide what their product consists of and how much it costs and its up to the buyer if that's acceptable.  At least with filament you have a choice of where to purchase, unlike with so many other things today.

NFC Filament. Are we going to be forced to buy it? -> Price difference

Let's forget the price of the NFC enabled spool which it's a one time buy and lets compare the refills.  Normal refills are 18.89€ for 1kg while NFC refills (honestly what can be the difference ?) is 21.14€ for 900g which makes 23.48€ for 1kg which makes a 24% increase in the price.  Which is quiet huge as an increase.  I will consider using other quality filaments in the future.

Been waiting for the PLA matte black non-NFC to come back in stock as I refuse to pay an extra £10. Have seen today that it is no longer stocked.
Wont bother with any more Prusament if Prusa are only going to stock NFC spools. Will certainly save on shipping fees!

The perceived price difference between the NFC and non-NFC variant is getting larger and larger. 😉 If we keep the temporary discounts from the non-NFC clearance sale out of the equation, how big is the NFC-related price increase really?  £10, $6, ...?

It will never come back into stock. You can try Amazon or PrintedSolid. There might be some of the non-NFC spools left there.

Well, if the non-NFC is never coming back, that answers the question and where and what i will buy.  I am not about to get into reloading spools with refills.

Well you can reload the spools with anybody's refill: Creality, PolyMaker etc and reuse the NFC tag. Anyway, I'll repeat that unless you need Prusa Orange I don't see why you need to buy Prusa PLA, PETG or ASA.
