NEW E3D REVO hot end

Im hearing about the new E3D revo hot end and how its a DIRECT swap with a V6 even for prusa. They say no firmware changes and everything should plug and play.

anyone else look into this? Im looking on doing this most for the fact of ending leaks forever.

@synnota,

Thanks for the info. Have "registered my interest" on the web page in your link. Looks like a great system.

Yeah, I'm keeping an eye on this. I am in the early stages of sourcing a Voron Trident, and for the hotend this is my #1 choice. Nero 3D has a beta in one of his printers and loves it. He also did an interview with Sanjay and they talked about the Revo quite a bit.

RE: NEW E3D REVO hot end

Installing a REVO hotend in Prusa Mini+ requires a firmware modification (because of thermistor mode which is different from Prusa's stock thermistor ).
But you cannot use a custom firmware with the MINI+ (except if you "break the appendix" on your motherboard).
So... you've got two choices:

  1. Break the motherboard's appendix, compile your own firmware with required modifications for REVo hotend and flash your custom firmware ...
  2. Or wait for a future revision of official firmware that would allow "custom thermistor" for Prusa Mini+

In both case, you need some one to create a custom fitting part and a guide to install the "E3D REVO Micro" on the MINI+.
Such parts doesn't exist yet.

Some guys already creasted a custom part for "classic" V6 hotends for Mini+.
E3D created a "REVO" hotend replacement that fits in classic V6 hotend.
Could be useful.

But REVO Micro looks more suited for a Mini+ 😀

RE:

@florent-duret are you sure? The Mini uses the same thermistor as the i3 afaik. And for the i3 there is no firmware change necessary for the Revo upgrade.
Also, the Marlin guides for V6 and Revo Micro both state:

#define TEMP_SENSOR_0 5

Did you mix up the PTC characteristic of the new heater with the NTC characteristic of the thermistor?

PS: e3D is working on a Revo Micro mount for the Prusa Mini and even if they don't release it, I will make my own.

RE: NEW E3D REVO hot end

So this is very interesting news!  Just found out about it today from a YouTube video.

Fair warning - I tend to kill v6s.  I just recently found out you're supposed to unscrew them a bit before unscrewing the nozzle.  So, been printing for a good number of years, running v6s on three different printers (MK2.5S, Ender 3, MPSM).  Don't know how many I've broken.  So I recently bought a MK3S+ to have a printer that "just works."

love the idea of having reliable tool changes.  And it seems like E3D is aiming this at our audience.  But frankly I wouldn't want to touch my new printer anyway and the easy "drop-in change" doesn't seem so easy, to be honest.

Just curious - has Prusa stated any intentions on this new hot end? (i.e. MK3.5S+++ will have it?).  I'm assuming putting them on a printer before Prusa officially blesses off on it will have support implications, right?

I would still like to get it - if I ever do resurrect my MK2.5S, it seems like this would make the printer more Dion proof...  Still PTSDing from way too much time fussing with my old printers...

RE: NEW E3D REVO hot end

No I'm not 100% sure at all to be honest. This is why I didn't preordered the E3D REVO Micro.

I thought I should wait for some kind of "upgrade kit" from Prusa or E3D.

I've only read E3D documentation that stated we have to change 3 properties in the "configuration.h" (if I'm not mistaking).
You were correct mentionning the "#define TEMP_SENSOR_0 5". There is another property to change (#define HEATER_0_MAXTEMP 300) and the build area "home position".

So it means we would have to compile ourself a new Marlin 2.0 firmware for the Prusa Mini+.
For Prusa, this is a "custom firmware" no? 🤐

I also read the REVO Micro uses a small 5v fan for hotend cooling.
E3D gives a "5V regulator board" (a cable) with the REVO Micro.

I suppose the Prusa "fan autotest" would fail (this is not really iomportant).

RE: NEW E3D REVO hot end

Speaking for me... If REVO is what we think/hope it is and the price is right, then I see no problem in running custom firmware on Mini. Actually I broke the appendix on day one for Bondtech upgrade.
The question remains, does it make sense? Yes, there's "wish to have" factor, but my Mini prints just perfect, so the only benefit I can see, would be quick nozzle change. Paying 130+€ for that is quite a lot, though.

If at all, then I would consider using REVO on MK3S, where quick nozzle change would be of more benefit:
1. because of larger print volume (there's more often need for bigger nozzle),
2. because it's surrounded by shroud, changing nozzle is kinda complicated (is much easier on Mini).

Just sharing my thoughts...

RE: NEW E3D REVO hot end

oh?
I made the Bondtech extruder update too on the Prusa Mini+ but I didn't perform any change on the firmware 😪.
I also expect to change the heatbreak by this one ( https://shop.levendigdsgn.com/collections/prusa-mini-mods-upgrades/products/bi-metal-heatbreak-for-prusa-mini ) but I didn't check either if a custom firmware was necessary.

I still agree with you: if the Revo Micro update worth it... let's use a custom firmware 🙂

I used custom firmware to change E-steps permanently (as I hated to run g-code after every power on).

RE:

I still don't see a reason for custom firmware on the Mini. If you keep the nozzle position, SPINDA position and the current fan for the new mount, then it should work with the stock firmware.

PS: Bowden length and e-steps can already be set in the HW settings of the current FW.

@Lichtjaeger
At the time when I bough Mini+, E-step setting wasn't possible in printer menu. Firmware that made that possible was released not long ago.

Reviving this since I saw that E3D has released their upgrade instructions today. https://e3d-online.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4415484403473-Revo-Micro-Prusa-Mini-upgrade-guide

Interestingly, they specifically say no firmware changes are needed. Just re-do the first layer calibration from scratch.

I can't wait to hear from people who will be upgrading theirs. I think this may be my upgrade for second half of 2022.
