Need help Please with how to setup the new Textured Plate

Greetings to All:

I just got my new textured plate.  I need some help to guide me thru the process to setup/calibrate & to use the new update with the MK3S printer regarding the sheet profile selections.

Is there a guide/video/blog that explains how to establish/setup a new printer profile (for the new version of firmware) for the textured plate.  Step by step please.

Thanks to All that reply.

Thanks @charles-h13, I checked out & followed the link you gave me.  I am trying to set up the textured plate for PETG but when I do the first layer/z-height calibration the heat temps for the nozzle & bed default back to PLA temps.  How do I get the right temps for PETG to do & set the calibration for first layer?

RE: Need help Please with how to setup the new Textured Plate

1) Set layer name to Textured

2) Set temperatures appropriate for your filament. This will be done by the calibration square you use. You should slice one for PLA and one for PETG.

3) Run Live-Z and set for your first layer.

4) Z values you set here will be saved for plate named Textured.

5) You need to do all of this for plate named Smooth too.

When you switch plate names, the stored Z values will be used. Really great feature - as long as you tell the firmware which plate you are using.

Its a pain but you have to do the initial calibration with pla on all your sheets.  Once you have 'something' in the  memory for each you can then load up a 75mm square or other calibration shape (circle etc) sliced for your material of choice and do a 'proper' live z calibration using the Jeff Jordan technique.    That will then have your new settings stored against them.

I have found that I often underestimate my live Z the first time for each plate.  I usually figure that out when I switch top PETG.

Thanks All,

@robert-rmm200, setting the PETG temp is not shown in PrusaSlicer update documentation.  After selecting "Textur1" you now have the choice to select "calibratiopn first layer", which you can then manual adjust live-z.

I have printed one piece in PETG & all seems to be fine because file shows the proper temps, but if I go back to "calibrate first layer", for "Textur1", the temps reduce back to PLA, which changes the layering functionality of the PETG.

What am I missing?

Start here: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/life-adjust-z-my-way/paged/1/

Download his calibration surfaces. PLA, PETG, and ABS each have one. They set the appropriate temperatures.

Select your plate, like Smooth. Print the calibration square from the SD card. Follow the topic instructions.

The Z value you adjust to will be saved as part of the surface definition.

Now switch to Textured and do the same thing again.

Am I being clear on any of this? If not - keep asking. We will get there eventually.

Thanks @robert-rmm200, I think I understand now.

After looking at the screen on my printer it does ask if I have loaded the PLA filament before I can do the first layer z-level calibration for the Textur1 plate.

Maybe Prusa could add a PETG question as well then the temps will match the filament before calibration.

You should be able to do calibration/live-z without having to use a loaded file.

Thanks Again,

According to prusa support, if you have live Z correct for PLA, you have it right for PETG.

I think I remember seeing somewhere (I forget if here, or on the firmware GitHub issues page) that they are looking into allowing different filament type temperature profiles for the initial calibration. Until then, you'll just have to use PLA set the flag that the sheet has been calibrated (and, can get you close). Then use the filament you want with adjusting the Live-Z while printing according to the "life z" thread to dial in the perfect setting for each sheet.

Once you've done the initial calibration for any particular sheet (which sets a flag to make the sheet available to select), you shouldn't need to do it again unless you either factory reset the printer, or run through the setup wizard again.

Thanks.

You all have been great helping me sort out the fine details for establishing different sheet profiles.

I washed my new sheet with Dawn dish washing soap, a couple of times and hot bed dried it using PETG temps.  The parts seem to stick pretty good and release well when sheet is left to cool.

Super feature to have multiple sheet profiles.  Saves a lot of fussing around.

Keep up the excellent support.

Someday, maybe I could help someone.

I have attached a project I did using PLA.

im having a issue with my prints not sticking im using hatchbox pla and the pla it came with and they both don't stick it only sticks with loads of glue my z is at -0.865 and any lower the nozzle hits the print.

@cameron-reuter, I too have had problems printing PLA+ on the textured plate.  So, moving forward, I only print PLA+ on the smooth plate & only print PETG on the textured plate.

I think this is a good point.  I have 3 PC sheets and 3 smooth.    I one of each for PETG, one for PLA, and one for ABS.  This for me avoids poor adhesion due to residue, sort of.  I still on accession find a PETG that is not compatible with other PETGs.

Hi Charles,

I have a quick question : How do you differentiate between the three smooth PEI sheet?

I have 1 PC and 2 smooth but I can remember which one is smooth 1 and 2..

There is a fine mark from a previous print which helps sometimes but I quickly loose the track and can't remember especially when there are not being use for like 2-3 weeks

Do you have any tips?

Nabil.

@nabil-m

My sheets have a piece of masking tape in the corner.  I use “filament type-live z”.

@nabil-m

A bit of masking tape, silver CD marker, stuff like that stuck to the corner?
