MK4S vs XL - Print Quality the Same?

All things considered, does anyone have any experience of the quality of output between these 2?  I've been playing with the MK4 for a couple of weeks, but some of the projects are just too small.  The XL would solve some of that, but I'm curious if the quality suffers any on the smaller projects I've done on the MK4?

Something of a misconception here:  With equivalent nozzles neither's output is better than the best Mk2 prints ... the limits are all physics, not technology.

The limits of accuracy, were hit years ago, later models make reaching those limits easier, often faster, with a few new features and capable of printing a wider range of materials but they are the same limits.

Cheerio,

If you checkout the Auroatech XL video they get slightly better results with the XL vs MK4

I have a MK4 and XL can’t say I notice a difference . But I’m not studying my prints in fine detail.

Thanks for that info.  I didn't realize that.  Just starting to learn and becoming a bit obsessed by it!

That video was helpful.  Do you have to do the calibration very often on the XL?  We've never had to re-calibrate the MK4 since we did it during initial setup.  I'm not clear if the XL needs it more often than the MK4?  Again, I'm just learning, but am interested in doing larger prints than what the MK4 has.  I'm especially interested in some of the Hueforge things I"ve been seeing.

I think I've decided on the XL with 2 print heads.  The 5 heads just makes it too expensive.  I'm going with the cabinet also.  Semi built, so that will be interesting.

You'll get far better results by printing in draft mode on cheap paper with a budget laser or inkjet and finally using a 3D printer to make a frame.

So, the extruded plastic doesn't enhance the image as well as a paper print does?  I have access to large scale inkjet printers, but I can't imagine the final result is anything like some of the images labeled as Hueforge that I've seen.  It's easy enough to take a picture and print it, but this medium seems to have a similar potential only in 3D?

True, it's nothing like it. Your inkjets are probably capable of over 1000 dpi - the standard extrusion width 'dot' with a 0.4mm nozzle is equivalent to 17 dpi.  The technique does have some uses but it's best restricted to block effects.

Cheerio,
