RE: MK4 Wishlist

Split mono-filament from multi-filament.  Make these two different machines.  As with most things, one item that's supposed to fill two roles never does either well.  Two machines could excel at their respective purposes.

My MK3s came with an mmu heat break which caused nothing but problems, so after tweaking settings and failing, I ended up buying an old style heat break, but then the settings were wrong for that as well, so I had to start over again, and after a couple months of struggling, I'm finally able to get a print to finish now & then.

So my answer is:  Just make it work.  Features are irrelevant if it doesn't even print without weeks of fiddling.

Being bit by the heatbreak myself just before getting my MMU2 I would agree that it would be best to ship something "meant to improve MMU performance" with the MMU rather than on all printers.

Otherwise, however, the MK3S is about as near perfect of a single filament printer as one can get and it does that job exceedingly well. I also don't think a dedicated similar-but-different machine would make MM printing any better. I think the MMU is a solid concept that just needs tweaks based on what users are finding in the field (like the uncooperative IR sensor, cheap PTFEs causing grief with friction, etc..). An add on to an otherwise strong printer is a good solution in my opinion.

I'd like a non touch printer, too.

And I'd like an easy switch to disable the wireless function, if the MK4 gets one. (Best would be a hardware switch, but that's probably harder to implement)

Also: Is there any documentation on how far the development status is? So will the release be in a year or in 6 months or in 2 years? (I hope this is not too off-topic)

An external plug on the controller box that each component can plug into rather than having to go through the nightmare that is opening that box.

Yes yes a million times yes!!!  Better for maintenance too.   Making it once is fine, but undoing it and re-doing it is not a good thought. In fact it’s really bad.

RE: MK4 Wishlist

Not bothered about a touch screen, but a higher resolution, slightly larger display with a much better thought out GUI that changes depending on which mode and which extra hardware options are in use.  The function ‘logic’ for the menus doesn't flow easily and getting to some of the functions can take a bit of thinking by the user to remember where things are.  Perhaps a Human Factors (Ergonomics) expert could be brought in.  With 100K printers out there may be there’s a bit of wiggle room for borrowing a consultant for a couple of weeks to look at the flow, and see if the menus and nesting functions could be better and work in a more logical route?

I am definitely in favour of a network interface.  I have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ via USB with Octoprint running all the time.  The ZeroW just doesn’t have the grunt to do everything and I gave up with my one very quickly.  The PSU capability could be bumped up a tad to allow enough current for a full spec Pi with a FanShim (or similar).  90% of my printer ops are over a LAN with Octopi to an iPad.

What about a Prusa Tablet App to keep the touchscreen requirees happier?  Might be easier on Android that IOS given some of the ‘challenges’ offered by the latter, but it’s a dream so it’s allowed.

What I would also like is a slightly larger print volume in all three axes.  May be 50mm extra on each of x/y/z?  Yes that might upset Lack enclosure Owners, but you’ll come up with an alternative.

Whatever you do, don’t go cheap on the materials you use.  It is one thing that makes me very glad that I opted for genuine rather than any of the clones as my first printer.  The whole system goes together very well and in my case it just works.

Get rid of the slightly better than useless Live Z calibration in favor of the "life adjust" method. It's much easier for the user to understand and FAR easier for the community to help with.

I don't see what is so hard to understand.

The number of threads from new users that turn out to be Live Z issues would say that it's not so easy to figure out.

Maybe "understand" wasn't the best term to use. The factory process is too fast and patches are too small for you to have a chance to react, adjust, and see the result.

I also do a majority of my ops via Octoprint. The most frustrating thing with my MK3s/MMU2s is every time I send it a single color job and the printer dutifully waits for me to go into the other room to select which filament to use on the panel, kinda defeating the remote capability. That would be my one ask if they include a Network Interface (or even a plugin for Octoprint), let me control everything on the printer remotely, including which filament to use.

Once you understand Live Z and figure out that it is not going to something you can measure with a micrometer, it is pretty simple to just hone in.

RE: MK4 Wishlist

My list:

  • Geared extruder
  • Filament motion sensor that actually works (indirect, w/bearing or the like)
    • The Mk3/s sensor was a feature-regression being now unable to detect jams, and it's STILL unreliable enough that people to seem to have to disable it.
  • Stronger hotend fan
    • The noctua sucks, unless your printer is unenclosed in a 65F garage. Give me a few more dB for a printer that doesn't jam.
  • Z-only bed, or non-moving
    • Ok this is a stretch - I'd love a fixed position bed for better speed printing large heavy objects, but I realize then it wouldn't be an i3, and would be a colossal redesign.
  • Easier option for relocating electronics
    • It'd be nice if you could simply unbolt the power supply and controller, slap on some extension cables, and put them elsewhere. Or not even.
    • I realize this also has a lot of implications, and the easiest way would be to just make extension cables  that attach to the existing cabling, which sort of at that point doesn't require additional redesign. But a more modular design, if possible, with enough cable to get the electronics outside an enclosure, would be lovely.

xy core machine.

Broken cables faster exchange, wen cables brake.

if you buy a printer that you have to build yourself, a quicker way to build, with prebuild parts, see some chinese printers.

Of course a bigger printer.

I would like a larger printer such as a 300x300x400 print volume. All of the current large format printers are junk except for the very expensive ones.

Kinda defeats the purpose of a kit if all you have to do is screw the Z gantry on a base... savings would be negligible compared to a fully assembled machine.

That is true.  I am building one now.  My first one was built for me.  I am building a Bear now.

I will now have 3 Prusas, 1 Ender-3, 1 CR-10S Pro, and Anycubic Predator.  The Prusa tops to the list, but the CR-10 S Pro and Predator are nothing the sneeze at.  All but the ender print good quality prints.

Touch screen only looks fancy but meaningless for build quality, it also increase the cost. I'm against it.

I expect anti-resonance design or material, better X-axis tensioner adjust range and make part maintenance even better.

I would like to see the MMU replaced with a Tool changer.  See this printer for inspiration:

Concept of self assembly kits are great, but i would expect few already assembled crutial parts for alignments, tensioning (gears n such) that affect print quality.

Also, some of FDM parts that hold rods (precise alignment), should be replaced by SLA/SLS or even injection mold parts.
