Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

Maybe an option would be to use your smart phone or tablet via wifi or Bluetooth as a touchscreen. Those seem to have been working fine over the years. Wifi needs to be reliably added for a number of reasons. The Einsy board needs a processor upgrade. A embedded Octoprint or similar would be nice over wifi to your phone or tablet with a video camera link.

The larger screen size for the fat fingered and us older folks is a must. A graphics display can include much more information than a text display. The encoder knob is a good HMI but it's time to take advantage of newer technology. You can still have both on the one system.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

The biggie for me is having true dual extrusion for model and support materials. This would seem to need a wider X-axis to accommodate a second extruder, whether on the same carriage or its own. I'm skeptical about the MMU approach [ducking].

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

To be fair, I'm almost never at my MK2S.
I turn on the thing, and then tend to Octoprint. Everything else (starting prints, monitoring progress) I do from there. For me personally, a touchscreen would do nothing but add to the costs.

IKEA Lack tables are amazing.

I'd much rather have a larger print volume, since we're already at a "Wishlist" topic.

Personally?

Give me a momentary switch to control the z axis.
Active when the print process is stopped or paused.
It'd be great to be able to move the axis up without having to scroll through all the commands on the encoder, especially for filament changes and nozzle cleaning.
Maybe the command could be further up the command hierarchy?

If you long press the knob, you can move the z axis. I do this after every print.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

I’d just like to add that I personally really like the touch screen idea,

Both my Epson printers have touchscreens. They can be rather annoying because of their limited size (ie what you have to touch is often very small, making selections quite difficult at times).

A new lcd/oled, better button/s and rotary enc, yes.... Touchscreen, no.

It seems like you did not read or understand the rest of my post. Adding a touch screen that can also be controlled by a rotary encoder and button would let user chose which method they prefer.

Only seems 🙂

Kinda negates the need for a touchscreen then don't you think? Why doesn't PR just add a tablet while they are at it. Keep it small and simple which means no touchscreen for me. 😀

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

1. Something to clean the nozzle, even after filament changes higher up in Z... more auto-magical things so we don't have to deal with them. maybe it's just a purge bucket with something to cut the filament at the nozzle since it would have to be attached to Z and is restricted in to X axis movement.
2. Homing to a Z max for certain things, like power failure or stepper error... easy to hit the top with sensorless as well. better than assuming it moved up...
3. IDEX... one could even be bowden and one direct drive. you could use MMU with one and support material on the other... or other way around.

I found it on Malin/Github and as PR FW is based on Marlin FW this feature works on both.

It is very usefull to raise the extruder after each print to cool down the PINDA probe on MK2S and get correct bed leveling on the next print 😉 This should not be a problem on MK3 as it has temperature compensation build in.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

Great tip!
Is there a tip to stop the 9 piles o' pooh during the bed level sequence?
Seems to happen at random, even while using the same material and temps.

This sounds like your filament is getting too melty and oozing out during the z calibration. Maybe try lowering the temp 3-5 degrees or add a small retract to your custom filament start gcode. Something like this (untested):

G92 E0 ; Reset extruder
G1 E-3 F1800 ; Retract 3mm

Also to keep this thread on topic, I dont really think the LCD controls are in any way inadequate from a UI perspective. The only real problem I have with it is that the display is the cheapest chinese piece of junk that it's possible to buy. It has awful response time/ghosting.

For MK3S i would suggest:

Change to higher quality character LCD with finer steps on encoder wheel.
Quieter and smoother bearings would be a plus along with a more reliable system for mounting and positioning them.
Increase service ability of extruder head

For MK4 I would imagine:

32bit Einsy
Minor build volume increase
Struts to stabalize upper z axis

I could see Prusa offering an addon which includes a Pi+camera+touch lcd and the printed parts to make it all look 'factory' in a "plus" kit.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

I would like Prusa to look into building a Belt, or Conveyor Printer.

BlackBelt's is too expensive. Printrbot started working on one, but haven't seen any more development lately.
With Prusa's hardware and software resources, I think they could come up with something awesome, and affordable.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

Some things I have on my mind, in no particular order:
[*] I wouldn't rule out the enclosure option - I for one would gladly buy it at 250$ if it was somewhat temperature controlled, put the electronics on the outside and would look "professional"
[*] A sensor for filament diameter
[*] Option of IGUS bearings
[*] Multimaterial with a single direct drive extruder - that would add another extruder motor, but the four bowden extruders would only feed the material to the main extruder and could therefore get away without bondtechs

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

I forgot to add:
[*] better adjustable belt tensioning and easier belt replacements
[*] idler bearings with grooves for the belt
[*] better quality belts

Hmm, that's an interesting concept. I think there's a lot of good reasons to pursue the single-extruder design for multimaterial (vs. having multiple hot ends), but it's also clear that this is still something of a science project.

I can see how going to a direct-feed extruder with a mechanism for automatically swapping filament would solve many of the problems people are having with the current design. Not only does it have the quality advantages of direct feed, it also puts the multiplexer in a less critical part of the filament path.

I hope someone pursues this.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

* Color screen with good resolution. Perhaps side screen buttons a'la the Agilent DSO3102A oscilloscope. A vertical set on each side for menu items. Leaves more room in the middle for perhaps important info, current model being printed, etc...
* Better input dial.
* A mounting arm for a PI camera mounted on the bed and wire lead outs back to the Einsy box.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

A few ideas id love to see

• Larger build volume (300 x 300 x300) like someone else mentioned maybe a Prusa i3 vs i3 XL I have a fair amount of things to print that would benefit greatly from this
• Integrated octopi option and camera mount for pi camera
• Enclosure kit (even though 250 is a little steep, some form of temperature control and the professional look would be worth it
• More color choices besides black and orange (would love yellow)
• Easier to access x axis belt
• Seems like a fair amount of people upgrade bearings but I don't know enough about this
• Grooves on the idler bearings would be great too
