Discussion on new PA11 CF filament

Did some quick searching and found out some cool stuff about PA11 which is the basis of Prusa’s new filament.

  • more UV resistant than other nylons
  • made from renewable materials! Mostly castor oils.
  • relatively resistant to moisture (some even classify it as non-hydroscopic
  • relatively light
  • Relatively high strength
  • dimensionally stable
  • although there is only one manufacturer so it is relatively expensive.

I know CF is cool, but from the testing I’ve seen, CF printed is far lower in strength than standard injection or thermoforming CF.  The layers just lead to less strength. Why use expensive CF when glass fiber would work almost as well?

Is there also a new printing surface coming out also?  That is my real issue with polyamides.

AFAIK yes. And you will need the new sheet to print that stuff.
My go-to PAs at the moment are Taulman Bridge and FishyFilaments on a BuildTak Nylon+ sheet.

PA is very difficult to print, but also a very resilient filament.

Glass would be a welcome alternative, especially since PA11 is already an expensive proposition.  AFAIK, the reduced adhesion between layers caused by the CF is mitigated by the PA’s ridiculously high adhesion property.  I believe the CF also raises the meltpoint and UV resistance which can be useful.

we’ll get the low-down in a few weeks.  I’m excited about this new material—should be great for lamp-armor!

Just to clarify my thought on inter-layer adhesion, I don’t think that CF reduces it, it is just that CF helps in individual layers material strength- but the overall part strength isn’t raised as much since the inter layer space still is the weak spot.

Frankly, what I think the PRUSA slicer should do is take a part and make it into something like a ‘Russian Doll’ with at least two parts that are printed in different orientations so that the inter-layer interface is at a 90 degree angle between parts.  Then use a 2k adhesives (with CF?) to put the parts together.  That would increase strength through:

-More perimiters

- Reenforced layers.

Interesting.  You are right in that the 2d nature of fused filament printers will always be a point of weakness.  I feel this is a step in the right direction—non reactive bio-resin.  The only thing that’s missing in my book is easy recycling/reprocessing characteristics—but there is no magic bullet.

I can print PC Blend Carbon Fibre on my MINI+ with great results. Why is not recommended to print PA11 CF on the MINI+ if print temperatures are the same?

One of the great properties of nylon is its use as a bearing surface. Ie it is slippery. I wonder how the carbon fibre affects this. Will it be more abrasive on a bearing surface?

Not sure how slippery the PA11CF is but Prusa ranks it above PETG.

Has anyone tried this filament already?
