BumpMesh -- a really nice online texture editor
Youtuber CNC Kitchen has released a really neat, free online editor which lets you apply textures to STL files. Lots of predefined textures plus the ability to upload your own (as greyscale images); nice control over all relevant parameters (scale, amplitude, 3D mapping onto the object, which surfaces to apply the texture to); pretty responsive online preview; smart STL export (automatically applies a suitable mesh size).
From what I can see, there are no strings attached. Link to the online editor and to CNC Kitchen's demo video below:
RE:
I've learned that humans will invent 20 different ways of doing things, all of them by experts in different fields who don't talk to each other, resulting in independently reinventing the same thing 20 times.
I remember when 3d printer companies were spending real time and money working out new ways to insultate printer enclosures and the best thing they could come up with was plywood. If they had asked any sail boat owner, they would have told them that for free.
Anyway I like this invention, even if it already exists as texture stamps for 3d mesh modelling programs like Blender. 🙂

A month ago I spent several days learning the basics of Blender and going through multiple false starts, trying to apply a Voronoi texture to an STL. Even after I have figured it out (and have taken notes to be able to reproduce it) I find it painful to have to go through the process again, e.g. for design iterations of my underlying model.
There is no doubt in my mind that Blender is extremely capable and powerful. There is also no doubt in my mind that Blender was developed by those 20 experts who are not talking to each other, as you mentioned, and is an absolute pain to use. So for me personally, BumpMesh is a blessing. 🙂

This is true. Blender has one of the worst user interfaces of any program I have seen (well, it's better than FreeCAD and GIMP but that's not saying much). I have a whole folder of learn blender memes.

An app like this texture stamp tool is the sort of thing I would expect Bambu to have on MakerLab. I am surprised they don't. (They probably will soon if this app does well).
