Wooden Frogs and Knob/Hook

My coworkers were interested in what the printer can do, so I printed off some woodfill tree frogs. They turned out well enough that I figured I'd post here too in case anyone was interested :). The only finishing on the top and right 3 was filing off any strands. On the bottom left one, I masked off half of it, sanded down the other half with 800 grit as best I could, and sprayed it with a few coats of satin polycrylic to give a side-by-side of what it looks like finished and unfinished. They were all printed as separate prints, but there weren't any setting changes between them. If anyone wants it, I can upload my Slic3r settings for woodfill (just followed filament manufacturer recommendations).

The second one is a knob/circular hook I made for our baby gate. The gate had been doing pretty well without a lock, but now that our oldest is 2 she's figured out how to open it. A standard drawer lock (the kind that loops over 2 drawer handles) slips over it and can rotate freely around it to either lock the gate or hang there when not in use. Minimal finishing, also out of woodfill. Blends in perfectly with the (real) wood it's mounted to.

And the last one: mid-print on a bracket with the infill set to 3D Honeycomb, just because it looks cool.

Hi Paul,

I think your frogs look awesome!

I am considering buying woodfill as well but I am a noob so I wanted to know how hard it is to print with woodfill compared to PLA? Did you encounter difficulties before you got a a satisfying result?

Thanks for sharing.

I'd also love some more information on how to print with Woodfil and what problems to watch out for! Your prints all look great by the way! The layers on the frogs seem to add to the wood effect somehow! Cool!

Hello.

Woodfill is a material you may experience some clogging of the nozzle with. It is given by the nature of the filament.
I consider Woodfill to be one of the easiest materials to print with - if you use nozzle 0.5 and larger.
Larger layer thickness adds to the wood aesthetics.

I never had any positive results with Bamboofill though.

Re: Wooden Frogs and Knob/Hook

I used a 1Kg roll of "Cherry Wood" through a V6 (Mk1) 0.4mm nozzle without any clogging.

Use as PLA, but expect stringing - this can be easily cleaned off with a sharp knife and stiff brush.

A nice touch is to change temps during print to vary the colour of the print.
