Spitfire MK XVI
I was very excited about the prospects of 3D printing a plane that can fly let alone one this big.
This was the very first thing I printed after fully assembling my Prusa MK2 Over the next 3 days, I didn't have one print fail with some as long as 11 hours.
There are some retraction issues I think on the end of the wings but it seems to be a PLA color issue as I had no issues with the clear PLA
This is a great plane, would be better to have the STLs but i understand why they did not, I will be buying the P51-D I think but it is the exact same plane just with Square wings. It would be amazing if they produced a F4U Corsair
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Looks great. I started printing mine yesterday. I started with the longer alternate fuselage-1 section and used it to fine tune temps for the filament I'm using. 230 was entirely too stringy for Hatchbox Gray PLA, dropped blobs everywhere. 222C seems to be the sweet spot average between less stringing and good layer bonding. I edited the gcode files to change the temps and add in my extruder steps per my machine. Instructions recommended printing straight from the SD card, but I'm printing through OctoPrint w/o errors. This design is amazingly strong for the weight. Can't wait to get her put together and in the air! I can definitely see a few more of these planes in my future. Antique radios are going to have to share some storage space in the shop 😉

Re: Spitfire MK XVI
What prop did you use for this by chance?
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Very Nice!
I hope to print a plane, after I set up the printer.
Who's Clear PLA did you use? These printed planes would look great hanging from the ceiling!
Thanks for sharing your model,
CB
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Question..OK Found it!!
Where to find the Spitfire..
I thought it would be in the SD card with the printer, but I don't see it there.
Can someone tell me how to get the files pleaseDrivers and Manuals... 1.7.5 Driver Download.. I did not know about this
This is the P-38 wing on the very new MK2
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Hello,
I am also printing the Spitfire. Printing works great in PETG and PLA.... just one question about this plane in general.... how are you supposed to land it without breaking the prop since there apparently is no prop saver or landing gear?
Make it as simple as possible and as complex as required.
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
I printed the free spitfire the past few days. I'm waiting on my hinges and electronics for me to finish assembling. All of the filament used here were remnants left over from other projects. I think I found a great use for remaining filament. My model was printed entirely of PETG.
Depending on how the flight goes, I might just splurge and purchase the P38 with retracts. Otherwise I might go with either a p51 or the float plane which would be interesting.
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
How did you bond the PETG parts together? is Superglue good?

Always land with motor power off, landing on grass is important as well.
With motor power off the prop will free spin and move out of the way. Most of the time.
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Alternatively use a folding prop.

Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Folding prop on Spitfire? Really? 🙄
Set ESC to use motor brake and you'll be fine.

I used BSI instacure + glue and used there BSI activator aerosol spray and it seemed to work well. This is the first time I've tried gluing PETG so I also purchased but am still waiting on my IPS Weld-on #4 solvent. From the Weld-on specs this should work for PETG and PLA. I plan to see what works better whether it's the CA glue or the solvent welding.
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Folding prop is almost as authentic as a two blade prop on a Mk XVI Sptifire

Re: Spitfire MK XVI
My nozzle is hitting parts during long travel, while printing wing panels.
Two small pieces have broken off. I want to increase vertical lift during travel?
I'm using S3D, would I change value in Ooze control? Retraction Vertical lift.
That doesn't seem right,
Is there a setting to move nozzle up during travel?

I was just reading trouble shooting guide at S3D site.
Sounds like my nozzle temp is a little high causing print to curl some.
I think the problem can be solved with a lower nozzle temp or maybe a small bit of cooling fan while printing.
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
What engine are people using?
I bought a E-Flite Park 480 with 1020Kv. It claims it is rated for 35-ounce (990gram) park flyers.
Have not flown with this yet.
Sadly I can only get two of the bolt holes to line up on the 3D printed engine mounts.
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
Hi everyone,
I want to print the Spitfire MK XVI plane that came with the Prusa printer. I want to order the electric parts but I am having trouble finding these in europe.
Does someone know where to get these:
Motor: AX-4008Q-620KV
ESC: CASTLE CREATION TALON 25
Battery: Turnigy nano-tech 1300mAh 6S1P 25~50C Lipo Pack
Maybe even some cheaper alternatives which will work as well?
Thanks!
Re: Spitfire MK XVI
This is my first print with my MK2S kit and I'm very pleased with the result. I still have to do some fine tuning but I am amazed by what this machine can do. 😀
