PRUSA USB stick self-reformatting, all files deleted

Hey folks, first time poster and couldn't find any existing topic relating to the problem I've encountered twice.

For context, I bought my MK4 printer sometime in march 2024, upgraded to the MK4S in December 2024, and I've been using the supplied prusa USB stick till now.

The first time it happened way some months ago, the self-reformatting occured prior to me attempting to upload a .bgcode file through PrusaConnect which is when an error popped up that said there was a usb connection/ driver error. Figured it was a weird one-off thing so didn't think too much of it since I had my files backed up.

The second time it happened was today when I already had a print ongoing, and was deleting some redundant files through PrusaConnect. Suddenly the same usb connection error popped up and my usb was completely wiped clean of all existing files.

Was there something I shouldn't have done or a reason this was happening? Is it possible the USB has outlived its wear?

Any insight would be appreciated, hope the info I have here is sufficient

Pendrives are consumables,.some of them are just very unlucky end go bad very quickly.

It's happened to me at least 3 times also over the course of several months.  It only occurs when I do a file transfer to the printer via Prusa Connect while the printer is printing.   Contacted the help desk about it but they did couldn't provide any valuable feedback other than suggesting to replace with a new USB drive.  The original prusa drive is only 3 months old.

RE:

The exact same thing just happened to me.  I recently upgraded from MK3S to MK4S and everything has been running perfectly for the last month. I clicked "Send to Connect" from Prusa Slicer 2.9.1 and then selected the "Only copy to printer" option because I was in the middle of a print.  Within seconds the printer paused and showed an error message to reconnect the USB. The QR on the screen just sent me to generic a sales page.  I unplugged and plugged in the USB several times and then just gave up and restarted the printer (using the restart button).

After the reboot, only the new file I had just sent was listed.  All other files were gone.  I can still see phantom entries of those the old files in the Prusa Connect under Printer Files. They all have the file name "?", are zero bytes in size, and have dates from November 29, 1979 to March 30, 1989.

Seems the odds this is a defective USB are about 0%.  Far more likely the file system was corrupted while writing the new bgcode while reading other bgcode.

I learned recently not to browse or upload files to the printer when it prints. Just wait when it finished and is in idle mode.
