Rattling noise from hotend fan

I am observing a rattling noise from the hotend fan when it is running at low fan speed or if I block it manually.

See the attached video.

To me it thus rather seems like the noise comes from some switching of the fan (firmware feature?) rather than bearing noise.

Is this expected or is there something I can do about this?

Best regards

Thomas Jespersen

That is definitely the fan blades hitting something have you checked if it's clear of strands of fillament or it could be blades hitting the casing

The printer has just been assembled and it made this noise during the very first self-test. The rattling noise remains present even if I stall the fan with my finger.

Hi, please update the thread if you get any answers as I have the same issue. Didn't even realize it was an issue before reading this post.

Hi there @ray-fields make sure the screws aren't to tight around the casing and does your noise still happen when you stop it with your finger

Thanks look forward to hearing from you

Here is a video of the Fan sound when the fan is not spinning (listen carefully towards the end of the video).

I had same thing, it was the heater/thermister wires that was too close to the fan.

Un-clamp the holder on top and wiggle -CAREFULLY- out 5mm or so more wire towards the hotend.

I used a small stick to finess "bend" then out of the fans way.

Then re-clamp on top.

But how would that cause any rattle when the fan is not rotating?

You are correct, it wouldn't. didn't catch that.

Just as a wildshot, do you use the supplied prusa silver usb with key-ring? Could it be that that's bouncing on the table?

Are you sure it's coming from that fan not the other one because it sounds like fan at about 10 percent ideling speed

You could be right. After fiddling and trying to adjust the other fan the noise has indeed been reduced.

From the assembly manual it was hard to see how far down the part cooling fan had to be pressed. It appears that I might have squeezed it too far into the slot presumably causing the plastic to touch the rotating fan blades.

RE: Rattling noise from hotend fan

My Mini started to have that rattling sound as well.

Apparently the issue was the fan blowing at the nozzle ( the one on the back, and not on the side when looking from the front).

I waited till there is no printing at all and then I just turned cooling to 100 and gently pushed the fan center wheel with my finger and the rattling changed a bit. Just watch out not to touch the blades with your finger.

I did it few times and with every push it was rattling noticeably less, so I pushed it few times untill it stopped.

Not sure if there was something inside and it's gone now or maybe some loose fragments were too lose and now they are not. All in all it works and sound properly now.

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.
