Did Anything Go Wrong Here?
This is my first printer and after a couple successful test prints featuring Benchy and the Frog I tried out a file that didn't come with the printer.
It was, as you can see, a simple sphere in a box. The bottom of the sphere wobbled a bit during the early parts of printing and thus didn't come out very well, but once there was enough support to keep it in place the rest came out beautifully. The box was fine, but the bottom seems rougher than the rest of the print. Is that normal?
I'm a little unsure if the issues here are the normal result of trying to print a sphere, or are my early layers not sticking well enough?

The first question which comes into my mind, did you slice it yourself? or did you use a gcode file frome someone else? If latter is the case, this could explain the issues, if you sliced it yourself, it would be great to get mor information on the object (stl file) and the slicing settings.

If you mean the part of the sphere very close to, but not quite touching the print bed, then yes.

As you don't supply a detailed image of the first layer it's impossible to be certain - but printing a true sphere or anything with a gently curved or filleted bottom without a messy area under the curve where the filament is not supported is extremely difficult. Even using support doesn't really work because there is an area where there is insufficient room to insert a support but the printer is still laying plastic onto thin air...
Attached is my take on your doodle. I have trimmed off the extremes giving the sphere a flat bottom; also top and sides. It should print more cleanly but there will still be slightly loose areas, not only on the sphere but also on the undersides of the cage where fiament is bridging.
